From ideas to action

Driving Positive Sustainable Change

Blog 18 May 2023

Generate Zero – Powered by Data Insight along with SkyCity and the Sustainable Business Council, recently hosted an exceptional event that brought together distinguished global speakers to shed light on the urgent need for action on climate change and sustainability. And what an event it was!

Dr. Maya Soetoro-Ng, a passionate advocate for peace and youth leadership, and Amanda Ellis, an expert in Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) issues, engaged in captivating conversations hosted by esteemed data and tech entrepreneur, Carmen Vicelich.

The event kicked off with excitement and anticipation as attendees came together to explore the critical importance of driving positive sustainable change.

Here are our key takeaways that left a lasting impression:

  1. Hon. James Shaw, the Climate Change Minister, set the stage by highlighting New Zealand's significant strides in climate action and innovation. His message was clear: every effort, no matter how small, counts in making a difference. Together, we can push boundaries and create a sustainable future, regardless of our size on the global stage.

  2. Amanda Ellis passionately discussed the essential role of improved global environmental governance and gender equality in addressing pressing environmental challenges. She emphasized the power of collaboration and inclusivity in fostering sustainable progress. By working together, we can overcome barriers and shape a future that leaves no one behind.

  3. Dr. Maya Soetoro-Ng discussed the critical intersection of climate and peace, and the important role that communities play. She also shared a beautiful Indonesian saying, "cuci mata", which encourages us to continuously revisit and renew our understanding of the work we do and its purpose. This reminder resonated deeply, urging us to protect our one and only planet and embrace our collective responsibility.

  4. Carmen Vicelich highlighted the transformative power of technology and innovation in shaping our future. She encouraged attendees to embrace change and take action, driving positive transformation from within. Showing that the change we seek begins with us, we can inspire others to join us in creating a sustainable world.

During the event, attendees generously contributed donations to the Institute for Climate and Peace fundraiser. With their support, enough funds were raised to send an indigenous Hawaiian climate leader to COP28, with hopes of assisting others across Aotearoa and the Pacific. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our fellow event sponsors, Chia Sisters, Streamliner, and SkyCity, for their invaluable support. These organizations share our vision of driving sustainable change and played a vital role in making this event a success.
